Factors to Consider when Choosing Vocabulary Software
If you want to improve your vocabulary, and are considering investing in a software system to help you, there are certain factors to keep in mind. Thinking through these parameters will help you make the right decision and ultimately give you the best result.

Your expectations and goals

First, you need to outline what exactly you want to improve. Secondly, determine what your short-term and long-term goals are. You also need to have in mind from the beginning what you expect to learn and how you will work towards achieving that end.
Needless to say, knowing your needs will often make your choice of software rather self-evident. Moreover, identifying your vocabulary learning goals will make the learning process easier and stress-free, as you will not have to worry about your progress or whether you're focused on the goal.

Vocabulary type

What is your biggest weakness? We tend to wrongly believe that vocabulary is an all-in-one concept, when in fact it's just an umbrella term for the various vocabulary types a person possesses.
So, what is your primary concern? Do you find it difficult to follow people's conversations or the contents of a textbook? Do you find yourself self-conscious when you need to speak or respond to someone? Knowing your weaknesses is not a bad thing - in fact, it's the first step towards progress. Unless you know where you lack skills, how are you supposed to improve those skills, let alone gather the appropriate tools and software to do so?

Set a precise goal

What will your focal point be? The English language is vast and overwhelmingly rich, so unless you start small you're bound to fail. Set small vocabulary milestones; these will be more effective and rewarding than having lofty but unattainable bigger ones.
This strategy of course needs some sorting out and prioritization. Identify your most urgent vocabulary deficits; these are the ones you will want to fill first. So if your needs call for marketing and media vocabulary, look for vocabulary software and resources that will give you exactly that vocabulary along with other tools.

Practical parameters

Once you've established your weaknesses, needs, expectations, and goals, it's time to think of practical constraints, like the time and money you are willing to invest in your vocabulary improvement venture.
If you want to actually learn, prepare to spend a decent amount of money. While there are free tools available online, it's difficult to truly improve your vocabulary without at least some financial cost. However, this doesn't necessarily mean spending a fortune on vocabulary software. You can in fact find many mid-range priced software that gives you valuable resources and activities without emptying your pocket.

Almighty internet

Do some internet research to get a clearer idea about what is currently on offer out there. Consult reviews and talk with customers who are already using the software. Being honest about your weaknesses and learning capacity is the most difficult part - the rest will come easily once you clear that up.
